Macmillan in Dorset

Macmillan Cancer Support is constantly delighted by the generosity of the local people and businesses and 2008 was another great year in Dorset.

There are many ways in which they have raised money for Macmillan, including joining in with UK-wide events such as the World's Biggest Coffee Morning; running marathons for Macmillan; organising your own or taking part in a sponsored walk; taking on personal challenges; undertaking street collections and organising local events such as fashion shows, nearly-new sales, head-shaves, sponsored events, dog shows and many more.

Macmillan Cancer Support is working in partnership with the NHS in Dorset to improve cancer treatment and care given to people with cancer and their families.

Macmillan is currently funding these new services in Dorset:

  • A Macmillan user involvement facilitator based at Dorset Cancer Network, Ferndown who makes sure patients' needs are being met by the county's cancer care services.
  • A Macmillan Social Support Services Manager based at Joseph Weld Hospice, Dorchester working with patients and families.
  • A Macmillan network patient information manager based at Dorset Cancer Network, Ferndown.
  • A Macmillan head and neck nurse specialist at Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
  • A Macmillan oncology dietician based at Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
  • A full-time and part time Macmillan welfare benefits officers working with the Citizens Advice Bureau, Poole, providing information, support and advice to help people deal with and understand the costs of cancer.
  • A Macmillan oncologist physiotherapist who will work with people whose cancer, or its treatment, has affected their mobility or strength.
  • Two Macmillan GP facilitators who will work with their colleagues across the county to ensure that the care of people living with cancer at home is as good as it can be.

Dorset has a team of more than 40 Macmillan professionals, including specialist nurses, counsellors, social workers and information experts who are helping to improve the quality of care for people living with cancer and their families in the local community.

In addition, Dorset patients benefit from the support of Macmillan's many other services such as CancerLine, patient welfare grants and benefits advice. In 2007 we gave a total of £50,504 in one-off grants to 153 county patients who were in financial hardship.
