Macmillan Cancer Support in Shropshire
Around 1,560 people are diagnosed with cancer in Shropshire every year. They need treatment and support. Macmillan helps by providing:
-
Health specialists. People in Shropshire benefit from 27 Macmillan professionals; nurses, doctors and therapists, who are specialists in cancer care. They help people manage their symptoms and aim to make living with cancer easier.
-
Someone to talk to. Macmillan supports a network of self-help and support groups around the county.
-
Financial help. Having cancer can bring extra costs - last year in Shropshire we gave a total of £71,800 in patient grants to help 201 people in the county.
-
Clear Information. The Macmillan CancerLine provides free information and emotional support for people living with cancer and now we have the Macmillan YouthLine, especially for people aged 12 - 21.
In addition to these we provide the Macmillan helplines, Macmillan grants and the Macmillan website - UK-wide services that benefit local people.
In 2009, Macmillan will be supporting these cancer services across the region and two Macmillan nurses specialising in lung cancer and in kidney and prostrate cancer.
Macmillan nurses specialise in providing care, support and information from the moment someone is diagnosed with cancer. They help people make choices about their treatment and manage symptoms and side-effects, as well as providing emotional support. Being told you have cancer is always traumatic, but some people find it more difficult than others to cope with the illness and its treatment. Sessions with the Macmillan psychologist will help them and their families to adjust somebody who has been helped by the Macmillan Psychologist is Fiona:
'Since my diagnosis with breast cancer in 1991 I have had a number of operations and procedures, I was reluctant to seek help at first as I though that there were many people worse off than me, but I was persuaded by my family and friends and I met Dr Marilyn Owens the Macmillan psychologist who is
based at the Shrewsbury Hospital, she has helped me come to terms with how my life would be better with a mastectomy, my husband Steve also benefitted from her expertise as we both had counselling
sessions, Dr Marilyn Owens has made me feel in control and has made my world a different place. I am now trying to give something back to Macmillan for the help that I received by raising money and helping
out with campaigns, when we got married we asked for donations in lieu of presents for Macmillan my best fundraising event yet!'
Fiona's story
We also have a Macmillan musculo-skeltal occupational therapist at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital who will look after people with bone and soft tissue tumours, providing them with specialist information and support and ensuring they receive the best possible care and a Macmillan palliative care service improvement coordinator will be looking to promote the best possible cancer care across Shropshire.
We are campaigning for a better deal
Macmillan is campaigning for a better deal for people in Shropshire affected by cancer, now and in the future. We want everyone with cancer to receive the same level of care regardless of who they are and where they live.
Together we can challenge inequalities, push for change and make sure that cancer stays a priority for the government.
Ways you can help us
By giving money. Every donation, big or small, makes an essential difference to people living with cancer. Please donate online, or remember us in your will.
By organising a collection or event. Could you use your hobby, or get together with friends to raise money for Macmillan. Why not set yourself a challenge and get sponsorship? What about making us "your" charity at work or at school? We will help with any events you might like to plan.
By joining a Macmillan event. Whether it's the World's biggest Coffee morning, the Flora London Marathon, or climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, there is a Macmillan event for you and we'll support you all the way.
